"Don’t Tell Nobody" was inspired by a story from the podcast "This American Life". In the episode "Tell Me I’m Fat" Elena Baker spoke about how her life changed after she had lost weight. Before the weight loss she was kissed only a couple of times and after the kissing every guy asked her not to tell anyone.

But at the end of the day the original plot is irrelevant to the song. The main character doesn’t have a specific gender, sexual orientation, body type, age or nationality. Every listener is welcome to believe that the story they are hearing is the right one. After all the feeling of rejection is truly universal.
